There is a huge difference between beauty pageants and modelling. Pageant kids are brought up believing that the spotlight is all about them; how they look, what they can do and how they come across as an individual. They are taught to sell themselves. Unfortunately, in the real fashion world, it is all about the product and selling the product. Although fashion and runway models do need to have specific aesthetic qualities and certain skills, their main purpose is to make a product look good, excite the customer and make them want to buy.
Pageant mums are known for being extremely competitive. They all want to be at the top of the game, knowing the most about the industry, winning the most titles and crowns and having the most beautiful, talented, world-peace loving child in the whole entire world. But what these mums don't realise is that they are selling their children false hope when they promise them that, one day, all of the late rehearsals, dance classes, American history lessons and hair tugging will be worth it. This is not the case. So many young pageant princesses dreams are crushed when they discover that all those years of intense training; skipping rhythmically down the runway, smiling all teeth bared and cutely flipping their hair as they wink and flirt with the audience, has actually moulded them into exactly what a fashion agency is not looking for in a high-fashion model.
A huge amount of time, effort and money is put into beauty pageants. A lot of pageant mums will hire pageant coaches and dance coaches, both at a great cost. They will then spend a fortune on outfits for each of the different rounds. Elaborate, custom-made ball gowns, one of a kind swimwear pieces, costumes, props and stage fixtures for the talent show, crowning gowns etc. Then there's the foot high, 30 inch long hair pieces, custom moulded dental flippers to hide any baby/imperfect teeth, copious pairs of diamond encrusted shoes, fake lashes, jar after jar and tube after tube of bright pink blusher, thick stage foundation, lipstick and glitter. All of this is used to enhance the pageant princess' features, body and overall image and make them look as un-lifelike as possible, all in the hope of being crowned Queen of Pageant.
Fashion designers will also invest an enormous amount of time, effort and money into a fashion show for their clothing. This money will be spent on lighting, sound engineers, stage support, models, stylists and hair and make-up artists, all geared towards ensuring that their clothes attract the audience of buyers and celebrities.
Unlike pageant girls, runway models do not try to steal the show. The point of a fashion show is to sell clothes, not people. If the model blew kisses, danced around the stage like a fairy, distracting the audience and did not make the dress look good, the designer would not sell their clothes and therefore not have a business. This is why pageant girls find it hard to make the transition from beauty queen to super model.
So, if you're a pageant queen, hoping to one day make it as a fashion model, you need to make sure you fully understand the difference between the two. If you love the limelight, can walk onto the stage without a full face of paint and hair styled taller than a toddler, you might have to accept that the world of modelling just isn't for you.
More and more women are interested in the world of business and are constantly looking for profit opportunities. According to experts who have taken the time to study the market, more specifically the Charlotte NC market, it seems that a common passion women share is related to beauty salons. In this city, the number of beauty salons is truly impressive. Still, not all are similarly profitable. If you are thinking of starting your own business in Charlotte NC, then here is what you should know.
Becoming a successful entrepreneur is not a simple task, especially if you are living in a city as large as Charlotte. With a population of over 700.000 people, Charlotte is the biggest city in North Carolina and the 20th in the USA. This means that the competition in any field is high. There are over 800 beauty salons in Charlotte, so if you are thinking of starting your very own, think like a business man and consider several important aspects. The location of your future beauty salon is of essence. Keep in mind that the profitability of your business may depend on this decision, so try not to take it for granted. You have two options in this regard. You can either purchase a space or rent it. Either way, the location of your salon has to be as central as possible. For instance, a great idea would be to find a space on the South College Street, close to the Convention Centre. This is considered to be the most central part of Charlotte, the uptown, if you may. This area is full of restaurants and hotels, all packed with possible clients. Crescent Avenue is not a bad idea either. This area is regarded central as well, so you won't have any problems finding clients. As there are over 800 salons in Charlotte, you should probably expect to find other such facilities. Still, in a city as large as Charlotte that is recognized as a real business centre and an important tourist attraction, location does matters.
When starting your own business you might want to consider the staff and the aspect of your salon. The staff has to be made up of real experts, specialists in hairstyling. Luckily, in Charlotte, there are several dedicated schools in this regard. Regency Beauty Institute, Empire Beauty School, Paul Mitchell School, these are just a few examples of what you may find in this field. You may rest assure that skillful hairstylists can be found in Charlotte NC. Last, but not least is the design of your salon. You have to draw the attention of possible clients. In the world of business, being one of a kind matters, so if you are not an expert in interior design, you might want to call upon a specialist. He or she will know exactly how to make your business stand out. In a market as competitive as this one and in a city as busy as Charlotte, you will need all the help you can get!
Beauty is NOT in the eye of the beholder. Regardless of how society has labeled any of us, we are all beautiful in our own unique way. Beauty is everywhere. It's inside and around all of us.
I really dislike the saying "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". As if any of us has any authority on deciding who/what is beautiful and who/what is not. Our limited human perception makes us constantly want to label everything. We attempt to make order out of a chaotic universe by giving everything a label and a title. We spend so much time trying to make sure we can distinguish everything easily (this is ugly, this is not. S/he is good, I am bad).
Within us all is something that, no matter what you may think or what you may have been told, makes each and every one of us more amazing than we could possibly imagine; our "self". When you look deep within your "self" you'll realize that there are many things that make you so beautiful and so amazing just for being the person that you are. Simply close your eyes and look within. There's no need to try. Whether you can believe it or not right now, you and everyone and everything around you is beautiful.
"Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You." - Dr. Seuss
It's unfortunate how often I hear people complain about all of the things they dislike about themselves. I hear them say things like, "I wish I wasn't so fat/skinny," or "I wish I wasn't so ugly." They fail to realize that their negative words and thoughts have a detrimental effect on their happiness. They've bought in to the silly definition of beauty that the media has imposed upon us.
You see, even a seemingly horrendous cockroach is beautiful in its own right. It crawls, it eats, it breathes. It lives and it is Life, which is so precious and has been so gracefully given to us, that makes this little bug just as precious.
Be grateful that you are who you are because nobody but your "self" gets to experience the life you're living. Trials and tribulations affect all of us so whether or not you think your life sucks, just know that there are thousands, maybe millions, who are right there with you. Everything from pain and sorrow to happiness and jubilation are all a part of life and because of that, they are beautiful.
Never let a negative perception of yourself stop you from doing the things you want to do in this life. You are you and that my friend, is pretty darn amazing. You are what virtually defines beauty!
